90% coming of age, 10% thriller/mystery. Stephen King really has a wonderful narrative voice and in this story it really shines. Set in the 70’s in a second tier amusement park filled with history and an engaging cast of characters, this novel shimmers with nostalgia and the weight of lost time. The research into the carny life really pays off as well. I could almost smell the popcorn and hotdogs. If your primary expectation is for a thrilling read, then you might be disappointed. I loved it because it is just a damn good tale told by a master storyteller at the very top of his game. As it is with most King novels, these wonderful characters are filled with heart and you will find yourself fully emotionally involved with their lives.
Highest possible recommendation.
